Asia's Treasure

The collection focuses primarily on South Asia and to a lesser extent on neighbouring countries of Afghanistan, Burma, Thailand and Indonesia. Currently it contains approximately 4000 items.  These include paintings, prints, textiles, metal work and ethnographic items.  Unlike the majority of other collections, it concentrates on the everyday or vernacular rather than high status objects.  There continues to be an active policy of acquisition usually sourced from UK auction houses.
The collection originated following a number of journeys through South Asia in the 1970s and additions to it have continued ever since. In the 1980s, pictures and prints started to be collected covering the period from the late 18th century through to the early 20th century, with an emphasis on subject matter depicting aspects of everyday life and include an extensive range of Company School paintings.  These frequently compliment items in the collection enabling them to be seen in an historical/social context. Good examples of modern traditional miniature painting have also been collected or commissioned.
The collection also comprises architectural items, vernacular furniture and objects which illustrate the everyday arts and crafts of the region and generally cover a period from the late 19th century to the middle of the 20th century, though good examples of modern production are also included.
The collection is housed in a restored Victorian skating rink in the centre of Norwich, in a series of display cabinets, and a new gallery was opened in 2011 to display vernacular furniture and textile hangings. Larger architectural items are permanently displayed throughout the building. To display the diversity and range of the collection, a new exhibition is staged approximately every three months.
The Trust has a small but comprehensive library, which is due to be integrated onto the UEA library database by 2015. Although the entire collection is catalogued in hardcopy, new acquisitions and existing ones are being transferred onto an AdLib database.
Examples from various categories of the collection can be viewed on a computer terminal in the gallery, as well as under Catalogue on this site.
